Growing Mosquito Populations & Pest Control Franchise Opportunities

August 27, 2021

2021 is turning out to be an unprecedented year just like its predecessor. For many reasons. With some of the most extreme heat waves ever recorded, the United States (and the rest of the world) is seeing an increase in the number of hot days per year – and pests that come along with it.

ARE MOSQUITO POPULATIONS GROWING?

While this is great for those looking to spend more time outdoors, the weather changes certainly come at a price. Mosquitoes thrive in warmer and humid climates, so the longer warmer season is great for them as it gives mosquitoes ample time to breed, bite, and destroy your next family BBQ.

Public health officials have recorded large increases in the population, mosquito-borne illnesses, with some areas seeing growth at biblical proportions, due to the increase of global temperatures. It’s predicted that by 2050, two superspreaders of these illnesses will significantly expand their range. This growth will put nearly half of the world’s population at risk of developing yellow fever, chikungunya, dengue, and the Zika Virus.

Increased Mosquito Population & Reported Diseases

In places like Michigan, there has been a large uptick in the populations of mosquitoes, ticks, and mother pests. This is mostly due to the warmer weather we’ve recently seen. And to make matters worse, Michigan has recently spotted the Asian tiger mosquito. This is the third time this harmful and invasive species has been spotted in the area. The first identification was in 2017, with the second being in 2018.

The Asian tiger mosquito is dangerous because it’s known for transmitting these nasty, and sometimes fatal diseases. While there have not been any locally reported cases yet, agencies are recommending property and homeowners have pest control services performed to protect them and their families.

What Does This Mean For Pest Control Owners?

While both residential and commercial property owners can do things such as eliminating standing water sources and using EPA-approved repellents, they are instead choosing to seek out professional mosquito and pest control companies – and are encouraged to do so.

According to Kevin Coelho of Mosquito Squad of Hampton Roads in Virginia, these population increases have been keeping their team busy. “On a day-to-day basis, we average anywhere between just over 100 to just around 200 appointments or customers we serve daily,” he said.

With the population of mosquito and mosquito-borne illnesses being on the rise, there’s never been a better time to be or become a pest control owner.
